We always start with a sketch of what electric field a positive charge at point 1 would experience from both charges:

Since the point is located directly between the two equal charges (r is the same for both equations), the magnitude of the electric fields are equal. From the drawing we can see that their directions will be exactly opposite to the point that the two fields cancel each other.
The field at point 1 is zero.
