Course Description
Physics 413: Magnetostatics is an introduction to magnetostatics
intended for upper division physics (and science) majors. The
course covers: (i) concepts and properties of steady magnetic fields, such
as the divergence and curl of the magnetostatic field.
The magnetic vector potential is introduced and potential theory
reviewed.
(ii) The properties of magnetic fields in media (paramagnetic, diamagnetic,
and ferromagnetic materials) are presented.
(iii) Electrodynamics and the coupling of the magnetic and electric
fields is introduced. In particular, concepts and properties such as
Ohm's Law, the electromotive
force (emf), electromagnetic induction, and energy, momentum, and
angular momnentum in the electromagnetic field are covered.
