What is Cosmology?
Cosmology is the study of the origin and evolution of the Universe
as a whole. The study of the observable features of the Universe,
really the constituents of the Universe, is known as
Cosmogony.
Cosmological Principles
Cosmology is an interesting science in many respects. A particularly
fascinating thing (to me) is that Cosmology is a science which sometimes
is driven as much by beliefs as by empirical facts. This
is not to say that one invents theories which are unfalsifiable
(untestable and
therefore unscientific) but rather, sometimes one
chooses to explore and develop
expansion of the Universe
the
existence of a
pervasive and uniform sea of radiation,
the Cosmic Micro-wave Background
the
chemical composition of the Universe
(90 % hydrogen and 10 % helium)
Today, we interpret these observations
within the context of what is known as the Big Bang Theory,
however, more on this later. Let us now investigate some ideas
(principles) which have guided how we model the Universe.
