Materials Science Institute
The Materials Science Institute fosters research by physicists, chemists, and geologists on the structure and properties of solids and liquids. The institute has facilities for experimental work at low temperatures and ultra-high vacuum and for the growth of amorphous semiconductors. Recently it has acquired a superminicomputer for computational studies and has installed a nanometer scale electron beam lithography facility and facilities for new materials growth. Members of the institute maintain user groups resident at major national facilities and participate actively in collaborations with materials research at industrial laboratories. The institute encourages thesis research on the structure and properties of materials in an interdisciplinary setting.
The Materials Science Institute is one of the centers of excellence set up by the 1985 Oregon legislature; it collaborates closely with related programs such as the Electronic Materials and Devices Program in engineering at nearby Oregon State University.
