Finding a Signal in Noisy Climate Data

We will be using the climate visualizer and reporter throughout class today doing various exercises.

The goal here is to see if we can develop techniques to find a signal of climate change within a database.

Some techniques we will be using are:

Signal Averaging

Signal Smoothing

Area weighting We will interrogate the database in several ways, and student teams will publish suspect events and we will discuss them to try and ascertain their reality.

In addition, we will be doing time averaging and comparing climate patterns between different decades to identify any possible systematics.
